A common first shock with BaZi apps: same civil month, different month pillars. In common Zi Ping practice, the usual reason is not a scam — months often change by solar term, not by the Gregorian 1st. (Some habits follow lunar-month mapping instead; ask which table is in use before comparing.)
What solar terms do
The twenty-four terms segment the solar year. For many Zi Ping implementations, the term transition moment that starts a month branch flips that branch. So:
- A February civil date may still sit in the previous month branch — or the next — depending on the declared month-command table
- Clock intuition about “early/late month” is not the pillar rule
Birth times near boundaries can change the month pillar by an hour. That is an edge condition, not mystique.
What transparent tools must disclose
- Whether months follow solar-term change
- Which ephemeris / calendar strategy supplies term times
- Boundary examples: one hour before/after a term
Two “solar-term” apps can still differ on rounding or data sources. Publishing policy makes disagreement discussable.
Order of checks
- Day pillar: first anchor after day-change policies match; rat-hour disputes rewrite the day pillar
- Month pillar: sensitive to solar-term / month-command boundaries
- Hour pillar: follows double-hour mapping; do not treat “rat hour” as hour-only
